Outreach Services
The Utah Department of Veterans Affairs provides outreach assistance and information to veterans and their families. It might be help filing for federal Veterans Affairs claims. Outreach may show vets other, little used or understood veterans’ benefits. ( Look at Utah Veterans Benefits listed at UtVet.com) The outreach program shows veterans that there is a branch of government trying to serve veterans, where they live.

Earlier this year, lawmakers allocated nearly $20 million for the construction of a nursing home for veterans in Ogden. This year, Terry Schow, Director of the Utah Department of Veteran Affairs, says it's time to start better informing the state's veterans about other programs available to them."This past session, the Governor had recommended a fair amount of funds to help us with our outreach efforts. We were not successful in getting that funding. But I'm optimistic that next session we can make the case that we need to beef up our funding to get the word out to veterans and their families about the benefits," says Schow.
For now, State contracted service officers from local community Veterans Service Organizations like the Marine Corp Leage, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, travel the state every month. They meet with veterans and help fill the needs of those who can't travel to Salt Lake City. Meeting space is provided at various Department of Workforce Services locations throughout the state. Schow says caring for soldiers returning from Iraq or Afghanistan with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder should also be a priority.
"It won't be long until nearly every National Guard member or military reservist in Utah will qualify as a veteran." noted Director Schow.
